The Waxing Gibbous moon phase is followed by the full moon then the Waning Gibbous phase which would of course project the opposite direction. The moon progresses through all phases in about 28 days. Amazingly the moon is drifting about one inch every year away from us. At one time many millions of years ago the moon would have been much closer causing turbulent tides and chaotic natural occurrences. The earth would have been spinning much faster as well creating a hostile environment for life.
I took this with a Nikon camera at 18x zoom free hand style. Just a few years ago this would have been impossible. Thanks to the ever evolving world of camera electronics, motion stabilization has arrived. The tree limbs in the foreground are at least forty feet above my head.
